Compassionate Care for Complex Conditions

At Monterey Bay Vascular, we understand that persistent leg pain, swelling, or heaviness can affect your quality of life. May Thurner Syndrome (MTS) is one of the many complex vascular conditions we specialize in treating—with clarity, compassion, and a commitment to minimally invasive care.

What is May Thurner Syndrome?

May Thurner Syndrome occurs when the right iliac artery compresses the left iliac vein in the pelvis. This anatomical compression restricts blood flow from the left leg back to the heart, potentially causing:

  • Swelling in the left leg
  • A heavy or achy sensation
  • Discoloration or warmth
  • Development of varicose veins or venous ulcers
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism

Who’s at Risk?

While MTS can affect anyone, it is more commonly diagnosed in women between the ages of 20 and 40, especially those who are postpartum, sedentary, or who have experienced pelvic trauma. However, it may present in anyone with unexplained left leg swelling or recurrent DVT.

Our Approach: Minimally Invasive. Maximally Compassionate.

At Monterey Bay Vascular, our triple board-certified surgeons—Dr. Mazen Hashisho, Dr. Leonard Caputo, and Dr. Ezell Askew—take a conservative-first approach. Surgical intervention is only considered after lifestyle changes, compression therapy, medications, and non-invasive monitoring have not brought relief or if symptoms are worsening.

When necessary, we offer advanced, minimally invasive procedures:

  • Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) for precision diagnosis
  • Balloon angioplasty to open the vein
  • Stenting to relieve compression and restore blood flow

What You Can Do

“If I could create a pill that would heal or prevent the conditions I treat, it would be exercise—12,000 steps a day!”

Our doctors emphasize a whole-body approach to healing. To support vascular health, we recommend:

  • Daily movement and walking
  • Hydration and circulation-friendly habits
  • Eating whole, unprocessed foods
  • Honest communication with your care team
